WELCOME
Driffield is a lovely place, and the Driffield and Wolds u3a is pleased to be a part of it. Our u3a is a community of people who enjoy socialising and, by keeping active, live life to the full. It is about doing the things that you enjoy and maybe learning a few things along the way.
WHAT IS THE U3A?
The u3a is an organisation for people no longer in full time employment; there is no upper or lower age limit. It is a registered charity providing educational, leisure and personal development activities for members in a friendly environment – but mostly it’s about meeting people and enjoying yourself. The Third Age Trust is the national organisation and there are local u3a branches all over the UK.
Local u3as such as Driffield and Wolds draw upon the knowledge, experience, skills and enthusiasm of their members to provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the members.
DRIFFIELD & WOLDS U3A
Driffield and Wolds u3a has over 300 members. We have over 20 groups providing a wide range of activities. Our committee looks after things like finance, membership records and the general administration that any organisation needs.
We hold a monthly meeting open to all members, where we usually have a speaker and provide refreshments. Our September meeting is an Open Day where members of the public can find out about the u3a and what we offer. Our December meeting is a Christmas party. Except for the open day and Christmas party, which are free, we charge a £1.50 entrance fee for our monthly meetings.
We produce a monthly Newsletter.
GROUPS
We have a wide range of groups covering activities such as history, arts and crafts, walking, games and just socialising. You’ll find an up to date list in our monthly newsletter and on our website. New groups can be started when a few members decide they want to get together and take up an activity. Our committee can help, through its Group Coordinator, with things like finding venues and supporting group leaders.
MEMBERSHIP
We charge a nominal annual membership fee, currently £15, and our membership runs from 1 April to 31 March. From 1 October you can get a half price, half year membership. The fee covers insurance, membership of the Third Age Trust and provision of “Third Age Matters” - the u3a’s national magazine. Once you are a member you can join as many interest groups as you like. A group may make a small charge to participants to cover things like refreshments and room hire.
GETTING MORE INVOLVED
We depend entirely on our members to run the Driffield & Wolds u3a. We value all our members and feel that everyone has something to offer. The main benefit of joining the u3a is the opportunity to meet others and to get involved in the activities that you enjoy.
If you just want to join in with the activities we already have then that’s fine. Maybe, though, you want to do a bit more:
- Perhaps you have an interest or a skill that you want to share with others. Maybe you could run a group to share your interest with others. All our groups have started in this way.
- Do you have skills that might help the committee? You could join the committee and help run our u3a. Or if you don’t like committee work you could help out at our meetings. We always need people with ideas and enthusiasm.
Our Committee Members and Group Leaders are always happy to talk to prospective members so if you have any questions just go on to our Committee or Groups page or look at our monthly Newsletter which also shows contact details. We look forward to welcoming you.
